James Meade Almond was born at Trentham, VIC, in 1886, to James Almond and Maude Madele Meade. He had two brothers, Percy and Garnsey who also enlisted but are not remembered in the Avenue.

He was a Bank Officer with the National Bank, Footscray, VIC, when he enlisted at Rainbow, VIC, on the 18th of February 1915, aged 29, having previously served three or four years in the Cadet Force. At the end of March he transferred to the 13th Light Horse and embarked from Melbourne aboard the HMAT A34 Persic in May.

Dispatched to the Gallipoli Peninsular in September, he was promoted to Lance Corporal on the 4th of October 1915. A month later he was in hospital with Enteric Fever and embarked for Australia aboard the HMAT Commonwealth in January 1916, arriving back in Australia on the 29th of February 1916.

He returned to duty in April and was promoted to Corporal - there is mention of him being promoted to Sergeant in August. On the 5th of September 1916 he was discharged, Medically Unfit - post Typhoid debility. Shortly afterwards James married Annie Agnes Gardiner.

James Meade Almond died at Geelong, VIC, in 1964, aged 77.

He is listed on the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour.
